About IWD

International Women’s Day (IWD) began more than a century ago and now belongs to everyone, everywhere — from grassroots campaigns and community gatherings to major global observances. It’s not just a celebration but a call to action: to challenge gender bias, forge equality and empower women in every sphere of life.

This year, our International Women’s Day celebration in Shropshire spans two exciting days! We’re shining a spotlight on the achievements of local women across all walks of life, from business leaders and community champions to everyday role models. While the focus is on celebrating women, this event is for everyone — men, women, young people, and families — because everyone can be inspired and take part in supporting gender equality. We’d love as many people as possible to get involved, whether by attending, sharing stories, volunteering, or simply celebrating the amazing women in our communities.

The History of IWD

International Women’s Day (IWD) has its roots in the early 20th century, emerging from the labour and suffrage movements in Europe and the United States. It began as a call for equal rights, fair pay, and better working conditions for women, and quickly grew into a day to celebrate women’s achievements and advocate for gender equality worldwide.

The first official IWD was held in 1911, with rallies and demonstrations across Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Over the decades, the day became global, championed by the United Nations in 1975, and has since been observed every year on 8 March. Today, IWD is both a celebration and a call to action: to acknowledge the contributions of women, highlight ongoing challenges, and inspire progress toward equality.

While the day began as part of political and labour activism, it now encompasses celebrations, community events, and educational campaigns that include people of all ages and genders. In Shropshire, we honour this tradition by celebrating the achievements of local women, fostering awareness, and encouraging everyone in the community to get involved.
